About Me

Effective public history is a three-legged stool.
My unique combination of skills and experience create a solid perch from which to inform and engage the public.

Getting the Story Right

In a time when claims of “fake news” permeate our social discourse, it is more important than ever that our published histories be accurate. As a credentialed historian, I work not only with academic literature, but also with newspapers (sometimes known as the first drafts of history), and other primary sources such as journals, diaries, letters, photographs and oral history archives. Whether sifting through the National Archives or your family’s trove from the attic, my researcher’s eye for the “gems” of history is crucial.

The Big Picture

These gems may not sparkle on their own, but when placed in the context of historical events, they shine. It is the historian’s experience and knowledge of that context that complete the big picture for readers.

Telling the Story Well – and Tailored to the Audience

The final, crucial step is to engage the audience with these historical gems as only a skilled storyteller can. My media career has prepared me to craft an intriguing tale, always with the desired audience in mind.

  • Historic Christ Church in Alexandria, Virginia

Christ Church’s origins predate the American Revolution and it was a spiritual home of George Washington, whose family held a pew there. During World War I’s centennial commemoration, I developed an exhibit to examine the Church’s activities during and immediately after the war.
